S House

S House

This house is a gift for the owner’s wife to rehabilitate their broken relationship. The program is rather small as there are only 4 family members stay at weekend as a second home.  I fill up the hugh 1.3 acres site with the idea, Home of a thousand outdoor rooms, up to all sides of boundary.

Personal bond is delicate. I believe appropiate distance  somehow works fine as well as a hug in daily life depend on the situation along our lifetime.

Tropical weather is the benefit. Between the day they can walk in and out without the feeling of too difference temperture between two areas. House is a shelter for rain protection with through ventilation with layers of privacy. Visual and sequence of public to privacy generate the planning.

Husband, wife and 2 kids stroll within the 1.3 acres life container. Husband has rooms to get away from the frustrated wife, step on gravel garden next to Buddha room and count 1-100. Wife who would like to scream in front of him, but could not find him as the hedge walls are a bit high. She will have time for cooling down. Kids play seek and hide even on guest car park where it become a welcome courtyard when there is no car. It is not just a heated concrete yard. Tress and hedges are the main architectural elements that change landscape to become to the outdoor rooms. The solid and opening lead them wandering from one to another courtyard that they please the eyes almost without end.

As Bruno Taut said when he visit the Katsura palace in Japan, ” In Katsura, the eyes think”.

I wish the couple would get it even I if they finally separate at the end. I did architect’s job.
